Medieval settlement remains

Full Description

{1} Although there are some small areas of village earthworks there has been no significant archaeological evidence forthcoming from the settlement which might contribute to the understanding of its medieval commercial functions. The settlement was therefore not subject to more detailed study in the EUS.

{2} Remains at Sibbertoft (centered SP 675827, 676829, 681828) suggest that the village originally consisted of two separate parts. The N-S street W. of the main village is called Westhorpe, and may have been a separate settlement. No documentary evidence. Earthworks suggesting closes and building platforms are concentrated in the W area, though development which revealed medieval pottery, may have destroyed similar evidence in the E. of the village. 1841 map shows an ornamental pond with two islands immediately W. of the village, possibly part of a garden. [RCHM plan].

{4} Possibly not taken forward to Stage 2 survey and assessment.
