Full Description
{1}Summary of sites by C. Woodfield; Roman Towcester; includes the one excavated by D. Jackson on the cinema site; with the civil war defence represented by a flat bottomed ditch, there was also evidence for soldiers camping on the site;
{2} Ditches or other festures were located in each of the trenches near the Richmond Road. Despite this is was not possible to definitely link up the features in each of the trenches. It is possible that three of the features are the same ditch, but were undated. A further, later ditch was observed in one of trenches. It was a broad, mainly flat bottomed features, on average 8m wide and was cut into the natural gravel to a depth of up to 0.3m (2.2m below ground level). A few pieces of 17th or 18th century pottery were recovered from the fill suggesting it may be part of the defences dug in 1634.
