Summary

Settlement remains lie in and around the present village. Documentary sources do not suggest any periods of depopulation but no clear movement of the village is apparent other than possible movement from the church to the present main street.

Full Description

{1} 23 paid the 1301 Lay Subsidy. 60 paid the 1377 Poll Tax. 31 paid the 1673 Hearth Tax. Settlement remains, Slapton (SP 640467) lie in and around the existing village, but do not form an easily interpreted pattern.
Population statistics do not suggest any periods of depopulation, but no clear movement of the village is apparent in the remains other than a possible movement away from the church towards the present main street. [RCHM plan]

{2} 35 famillies are recorded in the parish in 1720.

{3} The 1086 Domesday survey recorded one manor and a population of 10 . The population of the parish was 135 in 1801.

{4} The parish was Inclosed in 1759 (Act 1759, Award Enclosure Enrolment Vol. A p.232 (1759); there is no plan). Bridges says Slapton was part inclosed by c.1722 (1791, i. 236), which may be three closes called home close, new close or James yard referred to in 1608 (NRO ZA 6198).
