Monument record 5616 - Twywell
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
In 1086 there two manors in Twywell. It is a double row village with tenements fronting both sides of the main street. The church and probable manor house are set back from the road. In the centre of the village, a widening of the road adjacent to the manor and church, as well as an island of houses, might suggest a small infilled green or more complex core of the early settlement.

Full Description
{1} A single street village but with the church set on a back lane for unknown reasons.
{2} In 1086 there two manors in Twywell. One was held by the Abbot of Thorney which descended to Ekins by the late 16th century and later sold to the Duke of Montagu. The church originally belonged to this manor The other manor was held by the Countess Judith, part of which is later seen to lie in Slipton. It was suggested that these tenurial links indicate that the two were a single land unit prior to the Conquest. If so, then this was before the charter of 1013 which defines the bounds extending up to and along the 'old herestraete' or army road, which is probably the Thrpston to Rothwell road.
