Agger of road observed during laying of gas pipeline

{1} Agger of a Romano-British road seen in the section of a gas pipe trench. Info: D.N. Hall

{2} During the magnetometer survey a ditched trackway was located aligned roughly north to south. At its north end the ditches were 15m apart, but at the south south they widened out as though the trackway was leading to a junction or an enclosure. It was found during the evaluation. A succession of thin stony surfaces separated by layers of dark sandy clay loam presumably represent road surfaces separated by layers of trample. Towards the centre of the trench a thin layer of gravel and crushed limestone was located. This lay in the anticipated position of the west ditch of the trackway. Possibly it is a patch of re-surfacing material overlying the ditch.
