Full Description

{2} The foundations of Horton House, demolished 1936, have been re-used for a private leisure complex. No material finds were recovered, either from the 18th century of its earlier (Tudor) predecessor. The earthworks of formal gardens survive well under pasture in Horton Park.

{3} Post medieval country house of Horton; the earlier tudor structures belonged to the Parr family; the house of the 1720s was built for Lord Halifax; it was destroyed in 1936.
Details of architectural development.

{4} Horton Hall was pulled down in 1936.

{5}[SP 8212 5419] Horton Hall (site of). Horton village noted in Domesday as divided between several manors, one of which was waste. The descent of the manor is known. Horton Hall is depicted on a map of 1622. The manor passed to the Montagu family soon after and the house was probably rebuilt in the late 17th century. Landscape gardens [SP 85 SW 18] were laid during the 18th century. The hall was rebuilt again around 1740 and finally demolished in 1936.

{8} Earl of Halifax had a "very good seat and gardens". Part of the house was new-built, the old part was embattled. Horton Hall was demolished in 1936. The house was probably rebuilt towards the end of the C17th with further work with which Daniel Garrett was connected being result of activities of George Montagu, created Earl of Halifax in 1715. The 2nd Earl George Montagu Dunk continued alterations on house in the 1750s apparently using Thomas Wright of Durham. Lord Halifax's accounts show payments to Wright in 1754, 56 and 57.
