Summary

Part of the wider Brampton Complex. Cropmarks covering c8ha, including at least 14 ring ditches or hut circles, three double-ditched enclosures a ditched trackway and numerous linear features. A large quantity of worked flint has been found on the ground.

Full Description

{1} Prehistoric and Roman settlements and Roman kilns(centred SP 729647), in the extreme S of the parish,on Northampton Sand between 75m and 87m above OD.Air photographs show cropmarks covering some 8 ha.These include at least 14 ring ditches or hut circles,3 double- ditched enclosures, a ditched trackway and numerous linear features.There are also several rectangular enclosures.At the N end of the site a pit alignment runs N and may be a continuation of that visible to the N.
A large quantity of worked flints has been found on the ground,including waste flakes,cores and scrapers described as being of Neolithic and Bronze Age type,as well as part of a polished stone
axe and 3 flakes,all of Group VI.Iron Age pottery and the upper part of a rotary quern have also been found (SP 729646)apparently within or close to a ditched enclosure.A scatter of Roman pottery
and burnt clay with grass impressions,probably the site of a Roman kiln,was found on the E edge of the area in 1966(wrongly located in Church Brampton parish;inf WRG Moore).

{2}Cropmarks. Three double-ditches, fourteen ring ditches, pit alignment, ditched trackway and linear ditches; the Chapel Brampton group of sites extends under the golf course into Church Brampton. Some ditches survive as a golf hazard.

{4} SP 729 647. Worked flints found since 1964, with IA sherds at SP 729646 in Chapel Brampton parish. Field walking produced a large number of flakes, together with cores, scrapers and a microlith. Air photographs show enclosures and circles.

{6} Mr W R G Moore retains the above finds and also has in his possession RB sherds and kiln debris.
He indicated that the IA sherds were found at SP 72946465 and the RB finds came from SP 73096464.
The flints were found at the above sites and adjacent areas(a). The site is on arable land; nothing of archaeological significance seen during field investigation.
