Find Spot record 561/0/1 - Unstratified Medieval Pottery, Probable Manuring Scatter

A significant amount of medieval pottery was found during fieldwalking survey. However, subsequent archaeological investigation found no corresponding medieval features.

{1} Fieldwalking in October 1992 recovered 69 sherds of medieval pottery. Also 8 sherds which were unidentifiable. The medieval pottery was scattered over the whole area.

{2} A relatively large amount of medieval pottery was recovered. It is insufficient however, to suggest settlement and is likely to be indicative of two separate intensive manuring scatters, one at the northern end of the field, and one at the south.

{3} The concentration of medieval pottery appeared not to have been associated with sub-surface features, and the nature of this site remains enigmatic. It would appear to relate to a site either mostly or entirely ploughed out, or else represent a peculiarly dense deposit of dumped material.
