Full Description

{2} Structural evidence including that of a possible corn-drier. An increased build-up of soil in this area may have protected any archaeology so no major excavation or sampling was undertaken. Such pottery was was collected is dated to the 2nd-4th centuries AD. Exposed remains appear to include pitched limestone, possibly from a collapsed or tumbled wall and a possible floor.

{3} Area of Roman building discovered during trial excavation was resurveyed; building may be contained within possible enclosure of 0.04ha.

{4} Further south, early quarrying has largely removed any additional evidence, but trial trenching in the fields to the west of the walled area, and Windell’s small scale excavation to the east provide some additional details. The 1981 excavation and subsequent geophysics (Windell 1984) some 400m to the east of the defences, located a simple rectangular stone building occupied from the late second to early fourth centuries AD, and lying alongside an east - west road.

{5}Extra mural activity to west of Roman town: evaluation directed by B Dix.

{6} Immediately beside the excavation trench stronger than average positive anomalies within the enclosure may represent a hearth or other burning as was revealed by the excavation itself.

{?} ;,Extensive extra-mural acitivity including masonry;,Towards central southern part of field where ground rises & takes on flattened appearance masonry remains of Roman building were discovered in Trench 25; together with accompanying boundaries remains may occupy overall area not much greater than 0.25ha; increased depth of soil covering here is probably result of modern earth-moving;
