Full Description

{2} Tansor Grange Complex, south-west of the village on a generally flat area of Cornbrash at 75 ft. above OD. Air photographs reveal crop-marks covering a very large area, all indicating a complicated sequence of settlement. They lie immediately west of the line of the Irchester-Water Newton Roman road (570). The remains are located in three main groups. Cropmarks; rectangular enclosure, further enclosures and ditches; a complex pattern of ditches and enclosures including two well marked circular hut sites and a small rectangular ditched enclosure with two large pits inside it. Within this area quantities of Roman material have been discovered. Iron slag, building-materials and two 4th-century coins were found in 1961.

{4} Aerial photography, complexes noted at TL068901, TL064896 and TL060897.

{5} 1981 cropmark complex noted during aerial photography.

{6} Cropmark enclosures and linear ditches. NCCAP:TL0689/001-3+8-11+13+15+38-42 and TL0690/034-37.

{7} (Area TL 066897) Crop marks noted by Dr St Joseph in 1964. Within this area in 1961 D Jackson found iron slag, a stone scatter and late RB sherds. In 1964 he also found two 4the century coins.

{8} Dennis Jackson (MoW) retains the coins and states the pottery to have been fragmentary numbering 'a couple of sherds' only. He assumes the site to have been of 'minor occupation'.

Now under corn stubble, there are no surface indications of occupation. St Joseph's Aps are not available but photos by Mr Hollowell are annexed.

{9} Other finds from the site include tiles and several 4th century sherds. Moore captions his plates of this site as "Tansor Agricultural settlement".

{13} Cropmark complex at (TL064896) and (TL000897) on AP in 1982.
