Summary

Fieldwalking surveys in 1969 and later found Roman pottery. Geophysical survey undertaken in 2018 identified an extensive complex of archaeological features focussed on a group of intercutting ditched enclosures, some with internal features. The northern part of the complex has been destroyed by quarrying. The settlement lies either side of a Roman road [HER No 3141/1]

Full Description

{1} Fieldwalking recovered several Romano-British coarse ware pot sherds; SP 913 695

{2} Several sherds of Roman pottery were found here in 1969. More pottery has been found subsequently; SP 913 695.

{3} SP 913695. Field walking south of Finedonhill Farm in March 1969 revealed several RB coarse ware sherds on a sandy area. Worked flint flakes were also found on high ground to the south-east of the farm at SP 916694.

{4} Above finds held by B Dix. The fields are now under crop. The farmer knows of no finds other than those quoted.

{6} Extensive geophysical survey to the west of Finedonhill Farm was undertaken in 2018. A loose agglomeration of features to the west of Finedon Hill Farm included a complex, multi-phased group of enclosures covering c4ha. The complex comprised a large polygonal enclosure, a set of rectilinear enclosures in the south and a probable D-shaped enclosure. To the south-west a further group of smaller enclosures and to the west a set of linear ditches aligned north towards a small enclosure.

{7} Eighteen trenches were excavated in advance of development. Sixteen of them contained archaeological features predominantly comprising Iron Age enclosures and other associated ditches as well as weak evidence for the continuation of Roman road. A small ring ditch was also recorded. A large polygonal enclosure, probably of five or six sides, produced a small amount of Roman pottery. The enclosure was formed of up to three parallel ditches in some parts. The pottery assemblage was small and consisted largely of undiagnostic sherds.
