Summary

Cropmarks of rectilinear enclosures and possible adjoining field system identified on aerial photographs. Cropmarks of a possible multi-roomed building have also been identified. Roman pottery & rubble have been found in the same area.

Full Description

{1} Roman building (SP 96207615) lies north-east of the Three Hills Barrows on sand and clay at 220 ft. above OD. Limestone building-rubble, roof tiles and Roman pottery were found here in 1964 (OS Record Cards) and similar discoveries have been made subsequently {4, 5}. Small quantities of Roman pottery have been recorded over an area of about 4 hectares.

{2} RB sherds, roof tiles,stone footings found at SP961762 by Mr Rollings in July 1964. Also in this area a stone ridge (Poss Ro Road?) seen by D Jackson in 1965.

{3} Quotes {2}, from ditching spoil at SP96297610.

{8} (SP 964762). Cropmarks - a ring ditch and enclosures and a rectangular field system recorded on AP in 1979.

{9} (SP 963762). An enclosure recorded at this location on AP in 1980.

{11} The indicated area is under plough and nothing of archaeological significance was seen during field investigation. Mr Rollings indicated that his finds came from the spoil of a newly cut ditch at SP 96297610. The finds are in his possession.
