Full Description

{1} An Iron Age and/or Roman rectilinear settlement enclosure is visible as cropmarks on 2018 aerial reconnaissance photographs centred at TL 0326 7934. The ditched enclosure has maximum visible dimensions measuring 83m by 63m. Numerous internal divisions are visible, mostly ditched, but one visible as a pit alignment. A ring ditch, presumably a drip-gully to a round house, is also visible, with a diameter of 12m. A possible much smaller ring ditch is visible within one of the internal enclosed partitions. A pit alignment extends from the northern corner of the enclosure to the north-east. This and numerous intermittently visible ditches are probably remnants of a field system associated with the settlement. Also, located to the east of the enclosure are numerous small rectangular pits. It is unclear whether these are simply localised extraction or whether they could be sunken swellings relating to the early medieval period.
