SNN109265 - An Archaeological Evaluation of Land at Dallington Gateway, Northampton September 2012

Northamptonshire Archaeology was commissioned by CgMs Consulting to conduct an archaeological evaluation, comprising the excavation of 31 trial trenches, on land at Dallington Gateway on the northern edge of Northampton. The site lies within an area of known archaeological interest. A Neolithic causewayed enclosure and possible henge monument lie about 1km to the east. Adjacent to these monuments is an extensive area of Iron Age and possible Roman activity. The course of a pit alignment, visible on aerial photographs and confirmed by geophysical survey, crosses the south-western corner of the site. Pits within the pit alignment were observed in three trenches. They appear to have been fairly regular sub-rectangular pits, eroded into more irregular sub-circular forms. Only the extreme south-western corner of a rectangular double-ditched enclosure, recorded as a cropmark, lies within the site, and this was recorded in one trench. Several further ditches were recorded in the trial trenches. The only finds form the site comprised a small flint assemblage and one piece of fired clay.
