Abstract/Summary

Northamptonshire Archaeology conducted an archaeological desk-based heritage assessment of land at High Street, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. The proposed development site lies within the Wellingborough Town Centre Conservation Area. There are two Grade II listed buildings within the site. High Street was part of an important route during the medieval period and may have been called Le Brodestrete. Jackson’s Lane may also have medieval origins. The High Street and West Street frontages of the site were important commercial streets since at least the mid-19th century. The area appears to have been an important commercial and residential part of the town since the medieval period. Much of the site is currently a car-park; many of the former buildings have already been demolished. There has been no previous archaeological investigation within the site and little elsewhere within the town and the degree of survival of pre-19th century remains is at present unknown.
