Abstract/Summary

A geophysical survey comprising both magnetometer and resistance surveys was carried out at Holdenby House in order to inform a proposed restoration project of water management features in the grounds of the house. The survey covered part of an area of earthworks that are protected as a scheduled monuments although a small area beyond the protected area was also surveyed. Both techniques have successfully identified linear anomalies thought to locate pipes and culverts linking between extant ponds. Most of the resistance anomalies reflect the topographic effect of the earthworks and how this affects the drainage/water retention in the surrounding soils. The magnetometer survey (which covered a larger area) has also identified a linear anomaly to the south of the ponds that does not correspond with any earthwork.
