SNN110863 - Archaeological earthwork survey and trial trench evaluation on land at West Street, Stanwick, Northamptonshire April to May 2016

MOLA Northampton was commissioned by CgMs Consulting to carry out a programme of archaeological earthwork survey and trial trenching on land to the west of West Street, Stanwick, Northamptonshire. Three distinct phases of activity at the site were identified, the earliest recorded phase comprising undated ditches and pits which although were aceramic may be regarded as prehistoric or Roman in date. This is unsurprising given the site’s close proximity to prehistoric and Roman landscape in the part of the Nene valley. Medieval occupation, probably commencing in the 11th century comprised the foundations of stone walls and remnants of associated surfaces. Some of the buildings, particularly in the north-western corner were superseded by later stone structures, which were recorded on early historic maps. Elsewhere the medieval remains were often sealed by the build up of later deposits including banks. Post-medieval occupation continued until the early 19th century after which buildings were demolished. The relict earthworks, comprising a large extraction pit, ridge and furrow, platforms and ditches and banks relate to later medieval and postmedieval occupation and disturbance.
