Abstract/Summary

During October 2017 Phoenix Consulting Archaeology Ltd carried out an archaeological trench evaluation across a proposed south-east extension to Ringstead Quarry, Raunds, Northamptonshire (NGR TL 986 740). The work was carried out on behalf of Mick George Ltd and forms part of an archaeological evaluation required to assess the presence, extent, nature and survival of archaeological features within the extension area. Prior to the trenching, a geophysical survey had been carried out which identified a small number of anomalies on the eastern edge the site. 10 trial trenches were therefore excavated in order to investigate the geophysical anomalies, and to also test blank areas as a control. Archaeological features were identified in 3 trenches on the eastern edge of site. The evidence comprised of an isolated pit in trench 4 which contained animal bone and pottery of Middle Iron Age date, a ditch in trench 2 with a pottery also of Middle Iron Age date, and an undated ditch in trench 1. Across the remainder of the site no archaeological features were identified.
