Summary

Iron Age and Romano-British settlement site indicated by significant number of finds, 'displaced floors' and uncovered walls. Limited archaeological investigation in 1979 during pipeline construction identified Iron Age features and further pipeline construction found evidence of Iron Age and Roman settlement and a probable road.

Full Description

{1} Fieldwalking identified Romano-British 'displaced floors' reported in ploughsoil.

{2} Pipeline Observation by D. Jackson 04/06/1979 at approximately SP74744268. Iron Age sherds obtained from a feature, but no features were recorded in the core area of the known Romano-British surface scatter.

{3} Ploughing has revealed disturbed floors and walls, nails, 3rd and 4th-century pottery, samian ware and mortarium sherds at SP 747425.

{4} Finds, 1969 at a depth of 15ins.

{5} Finds made by RFK Kings from 1986-9 include 145 coins from Vespasian and hadrian to the late 4th century. Other finds include a quern stone. Copper alloy phallic pendant and twelve coins dating from Tetricus I to the House of Valentinian, including an aurelianus of Carus found November 1989 by RFJ Kings.
At the same site C Dawson found 7 coins dating from an as of Vespasian to the House of Theodosius.

{9} Archaeological evaluation and subsequent excavation were carried out during the installation of a pipeline in 1997.

The earliest evidence of settlement was in the Iron Age, with the discovery of a roundhouse. Two possible Roman roundhouses were identified in the south part of the excavation area, although there was considerable damage from the 1979 pipeline. In the north part of the site there were many ditches and gullies of Roman date. A possible trackway aligned south-west to north-east was also identified.

{11} 53 coins ranging from an as of Sabina to a falling horseman copy on Constantius II the collection includes an antoninianus of Quintillus. Other finds include two bracelets, two circular spoon-bowls, four fibula brooches, a balance arm and a quantity of Romano British coarse wares. Found by Bob Kings and F Dunning October 1992 to January 1993. A trumpet brooch and two more Roman coins found August 1993.

{12} 16 coins ranging from Marcus Aurelius to the House of Valentinian along with a T shaped brooch and a disc headed button and loop fastener found by RFJ Kings September 1991.

42 coins ranging from Tetricus I to the House of Valentinian found along with a Nauheim derivative brooch RFJ Kings 1991-2.

{15} The hedge between SP74544243 and SP74804250 has just been removed and a scatter of RB potsherd and the remains of two walls were seen at a depth of 15" at SP74734248.
