SNN72309 - Archaeological Evaluation at Ringstead Grange, Northants

Archaeological evaluation of an area of some 70ha to the south of Ringstead Grange was carried out in October-November 1990. This involved fieldwalking, the plotting of cropmarks, documentary research, geophysical survey and trial trenching. The major site discovered was an early Iron Age settlement comprising linear ditches, small sub-rectangular wide-ditched enclosures and ring ditches. It covers an area of some 3ha on a Kellaways Sand subsoil. Cropmarks to the north of the site may be part of an associated field system. Elsewhere in the area a post-medieval windmill, of post mill type, and late Iron Age features were recovered. In addition an area quarried in the 19th century was delineated. Trenching of a scatter of worked flints and a minor concentration of Saxon pottery recovered by fieldwalking failed to reveal any associated features.
