Abstract/Summary

An earthwork survey has been carried out on the southern bailey of Lilbourne Castle, Northamptonshire. An area of approximately 2600 square metres was surveyed intensivley to acquire more information on aspects of the construction of this monument. The survey has located a probable entrance into the bailey and has highlighted the possibility that the two southern corners of the bailey may have formed platforms for defensive towers. The survey was sufficiently detailed to indicate areas where erosion is currently damaging the structure of the bailey. This information has the potential to be used in the future, for comparative studies to determine the rate of erosion. The methodology used in executing the survey and an historical outline of the site are also provided to give context to the results.
