St Mary's Church, Great Brington

13th-century origins but largely rebuilt for John Spencer in 1522. It has monuments to Spencer family and also has inscribed tablets to Robert and Laurence Washington, ancestors of George Washington.

Holdenby House

A huge mansion was constructed by Sir Christopher Hatton between 1571 and 1578. Charles I was imprisoned here in 1647 prior to his execution in 1649. The mansion later became ruinous and much was pulled down, but a small part was retained and extended in the 19th century.

Northamptonshire is known as the county of ‘spires and squires’; its churches and country houses are well-known, but it has a rich and varied history and archaeological heritage beyond that. The Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is a database that records all known archaeological sites, finds and historic buildings in the county. It contains over 66,000 records ranging from palaeolithic flint tools, to Roman villas, to a Cold War Thor missile site.
