Description

{1} Trial trench evaluation of eight fields prior to quarrying. The evaluation confirmed that most of the enclosures and ditches known from aerial photographs dated to the Iron Age period. It also identified an unusual 'lazy-bed' system dating to the late Iron Age or Roman period. {4} A limited evaluation was initially carried out in February 1990 to see how well the known archaeological features had survived (a total of eight trenches was excavated). Trenches were confined to the interior of enclosures but clearly showed that ploughing over a long period had been destructive. The results of the initial phase were subsequently fully reported in the later phase.
