Harringworth settlement remains suggest village shrinkage

Map

Type and Period (5)

Full Description

{1} Six houses and/or farmsteads are shown in the area of settlement earthworks, however three closes are already empty by this time.

{3} Possibly not taken forward to Stage 2 survey and assessment.

{4} Settlement remains (SP 91859718) formerly part of Harringworth village lie on either side of the deeply-hollowed modern road to Laxton on the steep S side of the Welland Valley, between 175 ft and 250 ft above OD. Several clearly defined closes bounded by low banks and scarps, still exist, some with building platforms within them. On the W side of the site a series of deep hollow-ways has cut into, and partly destroyed, the W ends of the former closes. The date of abandonment is unknown but it had already taken place by 1732.
Elsewhere in the village are individual abandoned house sites. Two of these were still occupied by buildings in 1732, but most had already been abandoned by that date.

{5} Settlement remains (SP 918971), formerly part of Harringworth village. A recently discovered map of the village, dated 1630, showns that there were at that time at least six houses or farmsteads occupying the area of the earthworks. However, three closes were already empty and the earthworks probably represent
gradual abandonment over a long period.

{6} Area shown as already abandoned.

{7} The settlement earthworks were recorded by D.Hall as part of RFP survey.
