Cropmark of a pit alignment

Map

Type and Period (3)

Full Description

{1}Cropmark of pit alignment; SP73006383 to SP72946351.

{2} A north-south pit alignment. The original air photo plots show this feature running c.350m into the field. Re-examination of the phot and subsequent trial trenching suggests that this exagerrated the true extent of the cropmark by c.140m.
Trial excavation; a large sub-circular pit was found with steeply sloping sides and a rounded bottom; also found was the possible edge of another pit. No dating evidence was recovered.

{5} Trench 35 contained a shallow irregular feature 2.5m across and a similar feature further east that were intially thought to be geological. A review of their locations however, strongly suggests that these do in fact represent the continuation of the pit alignment.

{6} Pit alignment in the vicinity of the Dallington causewayed enclosure, which was plotted during a 1:2500 scale, level 3, photogrammetric survey of the area, carried out by the RCHME Air Photography Unit in October 1994 (Event UID 926850). This formed part of the larger Industry and Enclosure in the Neolithic Project (Event UID 923509).
The pit alignment is situated to the south of Grange Farm and runs from SP 73016387 to SP 72986363. Formally included in NMR Record SP 76 SW 13.
