SNN107409 - Dallington Grange, Northampton: Archaeological Evaluation Report, June 2007

In April and May 2007 Oxford Archaeology undertook a targeted field evaluation on arable land at Dallington Grange. Sixteen evaluation trenches were excavated, targeted on known or suspected features and settlements. At the western side of the site the cropmarks were demonstrated as being geological in origin. Linear cropmarks investigated by trench 36 are also likely to be of natural origin. Sites 2 and 3 were confirmed as being of middle Iron Age and Roman date as established by previous evaluation although further clarification of the character of these settlements was not possible within the scope of the evaluation. Likewise, assessment of the causewayed enclosure was beyond the scope of this investigation although a curving ditch excavated within trench 37 appears to respect the southern boundary of this monument. With the exception of trench 35, significant plough truncation does not appear to have occurred within the excavated trenches.
