Monument record 6362/1 - Denford Brickworks

{3} Denford brick and tile works operated during the latter part of the 19th century. It was one of many small brickworks operating in the county at the time. Unusually, unlike the vast majority of such sites, that at Denford has not been subject to later demolition and redevelopment. As a result many of the components of a Victorian brickworks are still discernable as earthwork features. The brickworks is reported (NIAG 2001) to have been operational between at least 1877 and 1885 and was certainly disused by 1900. According to O'Rourke (1970) they were worked by John William Briggs and later by George Siddons Junior. No brickworks is evident hereabouts on the unpublished Ordnance Surveyors early 19th century map but by the time of the 1880s first edition 1:10,560 Ordnance Survey map a ‘Brick & Tile Works’ are identified and includes several buildings, a limekiln and quarry. On the OS second edition 1:2,500 plan the brick and tile works are described as ‘disused’. A spring and two areas of quarrying are also evident. On the OS 1:2,500 map of 1973 two main building ranges are present.
