Full Description
{1-2} Geophysical survey revealed a large number of features relating to field boundaries, enclosures and possible structures. Subsequent evaluation indicated that, despite some truncation, a considerable amount of the archaeology survives below the surface. The settlement appears to have been set within a series of field boundaries. It covers an area of around 2ha and it consists of several enclosures, most notably a large sub-rectangular enclosure at its south-eastern end. The area within the settlement is clearly sub-divided by numerous linear and curvilinear ditches. The ceramic groups provided a relatively broad date range of the mid-3rd to late 1st century AD. Two parallel ditches within this area were much more shallow than surrounding features and may belong to a later, less intensive, period of activity.
{4-5}An area of possible Iron Age to Roman settlement is visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs and was mapped as part of the Bedford Borough NMP project. The cropmarks are centred at SP 93272 67469 and comprise a possible ring ditch, curvilinear enclosures, a rectilinear enclosure, pits and linear ditches. A later post-medieval field boundary was also visible but was not mapped.
