Full Description

{1} Archaeological trial trench excavation identified several ditches. Trench 2 contained a single ditch aligned north west to south east, 0.8m wide by 0.2m deep with a wide V-shaped profile.Trench 4 contained a single ditch aligned north east to south west, 0.4m wide by 0.08m deep, with a shallow U-shaped profile and concave base. Trench 5 contained a single ditch aligned north south, 1.1m wide by 0.2m deeo with a V-shaped profile and concave base. The ditches revealed probably form part of a series of Iron Age/Romano-British field systems identified from cropmarks to the east and west of the proposed road corridor.

{2} A further excavation area (Area F) was located at the northern edge of the development area to investigate two undated ditches identified during the evaluation of the previous Sandy Land Relief Road. The archaeological remains in Area F comprised evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation and a series of six undated pits and five tree throws, which were present across the excavation area. No continuation of the undated ditch previously identified in the evaluation was identified, but the undated ditch present in the previous Trench 5 was instead confirmed to be a furrow.
