Full Description

{1}Clay Coton in mentioned by Moreton as one of the places producing pottery in the county.

{2} SP 594 770 Clay Coton first mention 1175 though possibly included with Lilbourne in Domesday survy.Probably always secondary settlement to Lilbourne. 1523 tax return smallest for occupied settlements in county. 34 Hearth Tax payers in 1673 suggesting growth. 25 houses in early 18th century,1801 116 people in parish.
15 buildings on 1839 map.Fragmentary earthworks suggest sites of building lining road to N from church.Former green to SW of church.

The remains are very fragmentary, consisting of mutilated scarps, banks and ditches, forming no coherent pattern. However, the remains, and the limit of the surviving ridge and furrow, indicate that there were houses on both sides of the road leading north from the church, and possibly on the north side of the road leading to Lilbourne.
