Summary

Settlement first documented in 944AD, and comprised 21 houses by the early 18th century. Earthworks, now mainly destroyed, comprised a main through road and closes. Medieval pottery has been recovered.

Full Description

{1} Brass rubbings (presumably from the church?) of John Cressy, Esq and wife Christine (1414); William Wylde, Esq and widow (1422); Bridgest Wyrley (1637).

{4} SP 615606: First mentioned in a charter of 944AD. Domesday recorded a population of 22. In 1673, 39 people paid Hearth Tax. By the early 18th century 21 houses were recorded. 1801, 205 people resident in the parish. A map of 1742 shows village as it is at present.
Earthworks, now mainly destroyed, included closes to the east of the main through street with finds of 13th-14th century pottery, possibly planned closes to north of the stream (also Medieval), others north of the church, and a surviving hollow-way and closes west of the church. [RCHM plan].
