Monument record 1815 - Possible Iron Age to Saxon Settlement, south-east of Woodford Grange

Summary

Air photographs show a complex of crop-marks comprising enclosures and ditches and including at least four circular hut sites and a considerable number of pits. Fieldwalking over the cropmark site found Iron Age, Romano-British and Early Saxon pot, limestone and tile. Concentration of Iron Age and Romano-British pottery on area of darker soil.

Full Description

{1}Settlement (centred SP 98687710) SE of Woodford Grange, on River Gravel at 100 ft above OD, close to the R.Nene. Air photographs show a complexity of crop-marks comprising enclosures and ditches and including at least four circular hut sites and a considerable number of pits. A little further NE is a large Roman site with which it may
be connected.

{3} Archaeological evaluation of land centred on SP988775 carried out in 1989. Widespread remains have long been attested in the area, including a nearby cropmark site of enclosure ditches and hut circles.

{6}Field walking over cropmark site (30m transect) Iron Age, Romano-British and early saxon pot, limestone and tile found. Concentration of Iron Age and Romano-British pottery on area of darker soil.

{9} Cropmarks, showing rectangular and square enclosures are visible at SP 986771.

{10} The area is now under plough but nothing of archaeological interest was seen at the site. The marks on the photograph look to be superficial and recent.
