Full Description

{2} Medieval and post medieval village of Walgrave. Documents suggest a decline in population from 1086-1377. Domesday gives the population as 51. In 1332-4 the vill paid 62s.8d in tax, and 67s.5d in 1348-9. In 1377 151 people over the age of 14 paid Poll Tax and 46 people paid the Hearth Tax in 1674. In 1801 the total population of the parish was 424. The village was partially abandoned by the late C18th although a hollow way is still in use.

{9} Bobbin lacemaking and shoemaking became the predominant industries in the C18th but lacemaking had virtually disappeared by the end of the C19th. By 1851 10% of the inhabitants were employed in the shoe trade and this had risen to 20% by 1881. In the early days all work was undertaken at home or in workshops but around the turn of the century a relatively large shoe factory was built which remained in operation until 1980.
