Monument record 4253 - Romano-British Settlement, South of Harrington Road
Please read our guidance about the use of Northamptonshire Historic Environment Record data.
Summary
A series of cropmarks that identified a Roman settlement. In 2023, geophysical survey corroborated the cropmarks by identifying probable occupation areas that include several forms of enclosures, curvilinear ditches and intense pitting and post holes. Trial Trench evaluation confirmed the geophysical survey results.

Full Description
{1} - The geophysical survey found multiple enclosures in this area and is listed as site 2 within the report. The enclosures include multiple styles: a pentagonal enclosure formed of several curvilinear ditches overlaps with a very angular, rectilinear enclosure, whilst a third double-ditched enclosure lies just to the north-west. There are anomalies that have been interpreted to be pits and roundhouses situated within and around the areas. The report concludes that the dating of the settlement must be of the Iron Age or Roman period
{2} Trial Trench found evidence that corroborated the geophysical survey. Area 2 contained later Iron Age and Roman boundary enclosure features, together with limited internal features. The principal monument was a sinuous Late Iron Age to Roman boundary ditch traced for at least 290m long and aligned NW-SE, which had been recut on multiple occasions. A large D-shaped enclosure of approximately 1.8ha was revealed and contained internal subdivisions in the form of smaller ditches, pits and post-holes. A smaller rectangular enclosure, measuring at least 0.19ha, was located at the north-east corner of the D-shaped enclosure.
