Full Description
{1} Settlement remains SP 705500. Hulcote first recorded in Domesday. Subsequent tax figures list Hulcote with Easton Neston. In 1673 27 people paid hearth tax at Hulcote and Easton and the majority of these probably lived at Hulcote. Hulcote described as 'a considerable hamlet' in the 1720s. The earliest map (1806) shows four houses and three farms arranged around a triangular green. Between 1812 and 1849 most of these buildings were demolished and the present estate village built, comprising the rebuilding of the three farm-houses and two rows of brick cottages of gothic design erected to the south of the green. The exact date of this work is unknown but the old schoolhouse (in the south-west corner of the green) is dated 1816. Evidently an estate village for Easton Neston and since 1849 the only changes have been the late 19th century removal of the sole remaining property on the north side of the green and the enlargement of the green southwards to the cottages to give it a more rectangular form. Earthwork remains N of the green were mostly destroyed by ploughing in 1977 but consisted of narrow rectangular closes running NE containing building platforms. Post medieval pottery, rubble etc has been found where the buildings shown in 1806 once stood. Elsewhere large quantities of C12/14th wares were exposed.
