Full Description
{2} Cropmarks of rectangular enclosures and linear ditches and a ditched trackway at SP73456340.
{3} [Site 3] Archaeological evaluation of Site 3 was undertaken in order to evaluate an area of known cropmarks. Five trenches in this area contained archaeological features confirming the site was of Roman date with a possible Iron Age origin. The site extends further east than the cropmarks suggest. There was little evidence of settlement apart from around Trench 12 where a well, a drain and several gullies were found. Features in other trenches generally comprised substantial ditches suggests that it consists of stock enclosures, boundary features, and possibly trackways; a small settlement area may exist at the east end of the site.
{4} Site of Roman date with possible Iron Age origins. Its character would suggest stock enclosures and boundary features, and possible trackways with a small settlement area.
{7} Further trial trench evaluation was undertaken in 2007. Three trenches were located within the known area of the settlement. Even though one of the trenches was located close to Trench 12 of the earlier evaluation, the densest area of archaeological remains, no archaeological remains were revealed. In the other two trenches a series of ditches dominated by a NE/SW alignment consistent with the cropmark evidence were revealed.
