Summary

Earthworks of a deserted settlement identified in Stoke Bruerne Park, to the north of Stoke Park House. Neither its name or any documentary proof of its existence is known. However it may be 'Shaw' - a settlement which was extant in the 13th and 15th century. The earthworks have been partly ploughed, some destroyed by the drive to Stoke Park House and World War II huts. Visible features include hollow-ways and closes bounded by low banks and scarps.

Full Description

{1} A deserted settlement to the north of Stoke Park House, indicated by surviving earthworks, though neither its name or any documentary proof of its existence is known. May be 'Shaw', a place existing in C13 and C15. The earthworks are poor - partly ploughed, centre destroyed by the drive to Stoke Park House and WWII huts. Hollow-ways, closes bounded by low banks and scarps can be seen to the west of the dirve. Further slight earthworks can be seen but are too reduced by ploughing for their original form to be
ascertained.

{4} Archaeological observation undertaken during the construction of a new house revealed evidence for land-use and occupation at, or in proximity to the site, during the 13th/14th century. The medieval ditch, ditch located at right angles to the adjacent lane, may be a tenement boundary. This is the first datable below-ground evidence of medieval occupation in this area, which is corroborative with documentary evidence for the village or hamlet of Shaw.
