Abstract/Summary

During November 2004, Archaeological Services and Consultancy Ltd carried out an archaeological trial trench evaluation on a site at the former Tannery, Wellington Road, Raunds. The work was undertaken in advance of proposed residential redevelopment of the site, and was preceded by a desk-based assessment and detailed magnetometer survey. Nineteen trenches were excavated. Trenches 8 and 9 revealed a substantial Roman ditch, from which a small quantity of late C2nd to mid C3rd pottery was recovered. Trenches 1,3 and 7 revealed evidence of extensive quarrying of a probable post-medieval origin. In conclusion it seems likely that the area has remained largely undisturbed and undeveloped until now, with the exception of the apparently isolated Roman ditch in Trenches 8 and 9 and the quarrying in Trenches 1,3 and 7.
