Full Description
{1} Extensive limestone quarries found during trial trenching. Pottery recovered from quarry waste indicates 18th or 19th century date for exploitation.
{2} Possibly medieval and post medieval limestone quarrying was revealed over much of the area
{4} Remains of nineteenth century quarry workings were present in the north of trench one.
{5} Substantial ground disturbance possibly caused by quarrying activity was identified in Trenches 1,3 and 7. The probable quarrying in Trench 1 was coincident with a visible surface earthwork depression and yielded pottery of a post medieval to early modern date. The probable quarrying in trenches 3 and 7 corresponded with an extensive anomaly identified during the magnetometer survey also interpreted as quarrying. No finds were recovered from Trenches 3 and 7. The base of the quarrying was not revealed in any of the trenches.
The presence of quarrying in the vicinity is well attested and similarly extensive evidence has been revealed close to Thorpe Street and at the Smith's Containers site c.50m to the east. The areas of quarrying that were identified occupy the part of the site that was initially seen to have the highest potential for medieval and early post medieval remains associated with the site of Peverel Manor. It is likely that any possible remains will have been truncated by this activity, although it cannot be ruled out that the quarrying itself may in part have been related to the construction of the manorial complex.
{6} In Area 1 in the north-east of the site an irregular positive area anomaly indicated that this site had possibly been formerly used for quarrying. A curvilinear anomaly may also be associated with this former quarrying activity, but this is uncertain.
{7} Extensive C18th-C19th quarrying activity was uncovered during trial trenching.
