Abstract/Summary

In February and March 2012 archaeological evaluation comprising detailed magnetometry and trenching was carried out in advance of development of an area of arable land located to the south of Banbury Lane, Middleton Cheney, Northamptonshire. Two pits containing an assemblage of Late Neolithic grooved ware pottery were identified at the northwest of the site in evaluation trench 5. Archaeological remains were not observed at trenches located to the north, south and east of trench 5, but four undated shallow pits or post holes were present slightly to the west at trench 1. The Late Neolithic pits were not identifiable from the results of the geophysical survey and it is unclear from results of the evaluation whether they are isolated features or if further contemporary archaeological features are present at the northwest of the site. The evaluation also identified relatively recent archaeological remains associated with medieval, post-medieval and modern agricultural activity.
