Monument record 1301/42 - Gas Works (Raunds Gas Light & Coke Company)

The Raunds Gas Light and Coke Company was formed in 1866. Nothing visible survives.

{1} The gas company was formed in 1866 - gas main ran through Grove Street, Brook Street and into the Square - used soled for lighting. Gas was sold to individual residents shops used gas light as did the artisans in the boot and shoe trade when working at home. 1880 onwards all new houses built were fitted out for connection to the town's gas system. First industrial use of gas was in Nichol's factory - probably used for the heating of wax in the bookmaking process.
Series of industrial buildings on site of former gasworks, much of the site is still owned by British Gas and a generator is located there. The area of the former gasometers appears to be undeveloped, although it was not possible to get access to the land.

{2} Raunds Gas Light & Coke Company of 1866 initially supplied gas solely for lighting, but later expanded to supply the industry in the town. By the 1880s it consisted of a small group of buildings on the Wellington Road frontage and a gasometer on the western edge of the site.
