Full Description

{1} Settlement remains centred SP 788501 were visible along the line of NE to SW running hollow-way. A map of 1768 shows at least 6 buildings along this road: only 2 remained in 1835. Large areas of pottery dating from the C13th to C18th centuries along with stone rubble brick and tile discovered after ploughing levelled the earthworks suggest that an almost continuous line of houses had stood here. RCHM plan.

This site, along with others in the parish [SP 74 NE 11,12,15,16,18] suggests a dispersed medieval settlement pattern consisting of hamlets, with the single large village (Hartwell Green) a relatively recent development.

{3} The earliest evidence of medieval activity dated from the 14th-16th centuries and was associated with a possible plot boundary. The remains of a small building were also found south of the boundary, probably part of the small dispersed settlement located along the length of the hollow-way. It is possible that it was the northernmost element of a small group of buildings present on the 1727 map
