Summary
Investigations and excavations within the area of St Peter's Churchyard have located an area of Roman occupation. Features recovered include a wall and a cobbled floor. Finds include coins, pottery, tesserae, wall plaster, roof and flue tiles. Interpreted as a possible villa site. Further late Iron Age/Roman settlement evidence has also been found to the north-west of the church at Egerton Close

Full Description
{1} Probably not taken forward for assessment as a Romano-British urban settlement.
{2} SP 594370 Roman sherds including a piece of samian and a portion of roof tile, from a trench dug in Mill Lane.
{2/3} SP 593372. Exploration of an active building site, SSE of (St Peter's) Church has revealed an extensive area of Roman occupation. The finds include 5 coins, two each of Tetricus I and Gallienus and one of Severus Alexander. Samian and coarse ware, plaster, tesserae and tiles, both roof and flue. Trial excavations have revealed a wall, a cobbled floor and a covered stone gully.
{4} RB sherds, iron work and flue tiles from St Peter's churchyard (SP 592373) are now in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. Dating evidence suggests occupation from 1st to 4th century AD.
{5} NH 16 Listed as the possible site of a Roman villa.
