Full Description

{1} The village consists of two parts. In the north west is Church Lane, now a cul-de-sac; in the south east the rest of the village is arranged arouns a large rectangular green. Until recently the church and Road Farm stood in an isolated position at the north west end of Church Lane but the archaeological evidence suggests that in the medieval period the land was lined with buildings on both sides. The exact chronological relationship of the two parts of the village is unclear but it is possible that Church Lane is the older part and the green is a later planned addition.

Large quantities of C13th and C14th pottery have come from the area. A pond immediately E of the church is shown in 1780 as the remains of a small rectangular moat, probably the site of a medieval manor house.
