{2} Braunston is not mentioned in the Domesday Survey but was presumably included amongst the berewicks dependent on the manor of Hambleton, since the chapelry of Braunston was later dependent on the church of Hableton. The name of braunston is first known during the 11th century as Burtone, meaning 'Fortified farmstead' of 'farmstead near a fortification'.
