Monument record 2164 - Cranford St John

Cranford straddled a brook, which in the Middle Ages divided the separate townships of and parishes of Cranford St Andrew to the north and Cranford St John to the south.

{3} (SP925773) The double parish of St Andrew and St John was surveyed in 1973.

{4} The village may get its name from the crossing of the nafrysbroc by a road leading between the Saxon royal estate centres of Brigstock and Finedon. The village comprises two ends, each a separate parish: Cranford St Andrew on the north side of the brook and St John on the south side. Saxon sites lie in similar topographical and geological situations both up and downstream in adjacent townships.
St John is divided into two parts, which might relate to the two medieval manors. The eastern half, including the church, rectory and the Buccleuch manor-house, fronts either side of a road running parallel to the main road. The western half fronts the other side of the main road. A small island of development at the junction with the side roads, where the pound stood, may be encroachment on to a small green.
