Summary
Possibly a planned medieval village

Type and Period (1)
Full Description
{1} Pilton appears to be a planned medieval village based around a system of three roads; these all lead into an east-west track which could have led to Lilford. The church and manor house sit oddly in relation to the rest of the village. Despite the lack of a clear stratigraphic relationship the way in which they are closely hemmed in by ridge and furrow suggests that they too are relatively late additions to the village plan. The church contains C12th work, so if this line of argument is accepted then at least part of the planned village must be C12th or earlier. There were still houses in this field in the C16th. A document of 1660 gives the area of Hall Close as 13 acres, but by 1769 it had grown to 38 acres, to which by 1819 a further acres had also been added. By then it had been planted with ornamental trees.
