Monument record 6904 - Open Field System, Raunds

Please read our .

Summary

The common fields of the old parish of Raunds were enclosed by an Act of Parliament of 1797. Extensive swathes of medieval or post-medieval ridge and furrow cultivation, remnants of the former open common field system, is visible on historic aerial photographs and remote sensing data. Located in the eastern half of Raunds parish, the cultivation earthworks are mainly aligned NW-SE or NE-SW, with a few blocks N-S. Notable are the linear and sinuous earthwork banks that are likely of medieval date, but some of which may have earlier origins. Between 35-37 metres in width, the function of many of these earthworks may be boundaries to ridge and furrow blocks, or plough headlands, but others appear to underlie extant ridge and furrow earthworks. Although many blocks are extant earthworks on aerial photographs taken in the 1940s, remote sensing data from 2009 and aerial photographs taken in 2018 show that much of these earthworks have since been plough levelled.
