Abstract/Summary

The main objectives of evaluation prior to development were to investigate a barrow ditch and possible long mound on the floodplain, evaluate surrounding land for associated features and environmental evidence, fieldwalk all arable fields, and trial trench cropmark sites and other features isolated during fieldwalking. The barrow contained prehistoric pottery and an iron object beneath it which may have had an agricultural function. The long mound is now thought to be naturally occurring. Ditches, a square enclosure, ring ditch, and trackway were observed and investigated. Worked flint, a little pottery (Iron Age, Romano-British and Saxon), Roman coins, and one medieval coin were recovered during fieldwalking. The ditches and enclosures near to the long mound are thought to be Late Iron Age or Roman, and the trackway also seems orientated towards Roman occupation.
