{2} Charlton is listed as a hamlet in the parish of Newbottle and in the Domesday Survey it was recorded as 'Cerlinton' and was a holding of the Bishop of Bayeux, comprising 3 virgates and the 1/5 part of a virgate within the soke of (Kings) Sutton. During the 12th and 13th centuries Charlton was referred to as Cherlington, Cerletona, Cherilton, Chorlton and Charleton.
In the second half of the 19th century Kelly's Directory shows the following trades in the village: wheelwright, carrier, stone mason, parish clerk, beer retailer, butcher, shop keeper, baker, farmer and labourer, watch and clock maker, carpenter and tailor.
